Birthdays And Stuff

Hey, how's that for a catchy title?  *G*  Saturday [yesterday] was my youngest son's 18th birthday....it totally amazes me that my kids get older and I don't.  No clue how that works, just glad of it.

006    2

We went out for dinner at Bob Evans, and guess who came with us...

007    2

Yep, mum.  They had a straw war.  You know, blowing your straw paper at each other across the table....sigh.  SHE taught them that.

Hubby made a nice chocolate cake that I couldn't have.

026    2

It smelled wonderful, and I'm so glad they ate it all up so I wouldn't be tempted any more.

Now for the other stuff.  Next weekend, this coming Saturday, my two boys and I and my mum are heading to New York City.  I can't believe we're actually doing it, we've talked about it for months now.  We're staying at a hotel in Secaucus, NJ, and taking the bus into the city.  I need those of you who have been there to tell me what I shouldn't miss....I know we're going to Central Park, the Garment District, possibly Chinatown, Times Square, Broadway, and other than that I have no clue.  I do believe there is a quilt shop somewhere, does anyone know the name of it?

You know, I grew up reading books about children who lived in New York, and always wanted to see it....this is a dream come true!  If there are any must-sees on your list, I'd love for you to share!  The ONLY bummer is that my camera is broken.....wah....

I think you have a pretty good list. You might want to consider the Staten Island Ferry. It's free, and will take you reasonably close to the Statue of Liberty. We ride over, and immediately take the return ferry. Great views of the skyline. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is nice too, if you have the time. I' sure you'll have a blast!!

That cake looks yummy! If I was going to New York, I'd want to go see the pools where the twin towers were. I've seen pictures but I can't imagine what it would feel like to be there in person. Have a safe trip! :0)

Enjoy New York....so much to see! We did the "hop on-hop off bus" , it was great....gave us a good overview of the sites, and then we went back to some places we wanted to spend more time.

Happy birthday to your boy, 18 is special. I dream about going to NY too but its a little bit further for me, half way around the world! I'm planning a trip for next year and just might get there so tell me when you have all the good stuff listed.

Happy Birthday to your son! I love NYC! You have a great list going. Although being at the observation deck of the Empire State Bldg is cool the VERRRRRY long line to get there is frustrating and I would not put up with it again. If you like museums - MOMA is cool. (Museum of Modern Art). Ride the subways! Walk every where! Yes, ride the Staten Island Ferry. Grand Central Station is cool, Rockefeller Plaza of course and if you want to see Ground Zero that is near the Staten Island Ferry terminal, I believe. BORROW a camera!!! Go to a show if you can swing it - such a fun experience.
HAVE FUN!!

Happy Birthday to your son. I forgot about straw wars...think I need to teach that to the Dots!!! Deffinitely visit the 9/ll Memorial, and we loved going to the top at 30 Rock!!! So much fun stuff to do in New York for sure. Have a great time.

I went to NY and lasted about 4 hours and went home, lol. I am city phobic, way too crowded and close for me. Check with Vicki at bumble bee quilts, she would know the best places to visit and any quilt shops.

Them getting older while we don't - is the new math - and I'm all for it! Pretty soon my kids will be older than I am :) I've been older than my older sister for decades now - I can't say I'm all that impressed with HER math, LOL!

Have fun in NYC - I would sooooooooo love to go there. One of these days!

Happy Birthday to your son. We both have our youngest at 18 now. Once again... I just love your Mum! She's so cool... A bit like my father in law.. he used to teach the kids lots of things like that too and there were always things flying around the table at each other.. usually bits of serviette rolled up and aimed at each of them (unfortunately sometimes it was even food!!!) but the boys loved it. Enjoy your trip to New York. I hope I get there one day. Please borrow or buy another camera!!! Have an AMAZING time xx

Wow, Happy Birthday to your DS. My youngest just turned 21 a couple of weeks ago. Where does the time go. And as for NYC, CJ had some great suggestions. However I would suggest the Museum of Natural History, especially if your boys are interested. If you go to Rockefeller Center, check out St Patrick's Cathedral, and the New York City Library. Did you guess that I lived there?? Yes many many MANY years ago, when I WAS a little girl. If you get down to 34th Street, there is Macy's and Gimbels. Now I don't know if they still have the bargain basement, but that's where we shopped :-) And I think the Quilt shop is somewhere down in that area too. It may be called City Quilts (??) Check google. Be sure to buy a fat quarter of NYC fabric. If I ever get back there, that's what I will buy. Have fun!!

You are going to have so much fun in NYC!!! Grand Central Station, New York Library, Wall Street, and the Federal Hall where Washington was sworn in as President.

Happy Birthday to the Birthday Boy!

Yes, Miss Baby is feeling better. She is sleeping through the night for the second night. I had forgotten how hard life was when she didn't sleep through the night as an infant... ;)

Hi Allie, we took our 12 year old twin daughters to New York a few years ago. The best thing was seeing Mamma Mia on Broadway and the supermarket across the road from our apartment. I have never seen a supermarket like it anywhere in the world before or after. I just wish I could remember where it was but I do know it was just on the outskirts (so the speak)of Broadway. We walked to the theatre. Go to a show, any show on Broadway! Go to the top of the Empire State Building but make sure you go to the toilet before you get in line. My girls and I wanted to go when we had been in the line for half and hour and were told that there was a toilet when we got to the top. What they didn't tell us was that it was a three hour wait to get there!!!! It might not be too exciting for your crew but we really enjoyed the American Girl shop. We'd never seen a shop like it before. The toy shop at Times Square was fun too. New York was fun to visit but I wouldn't like to live there, too crowded. I like my Australian country town. HAVE FUN!!! My first trip to NYC I wanted to do it all and there is just no way, unless you stay a month. Make a list and then map it out so you can make the best of your time doing things that are close to one another. You will have a blast, can't wait to hear about it when you return!!

Happy B-day to the kid! The cake looks absolutely wonderful! Hugs!

I hope you have a fabulous time in NY, and can finagle yourself a camera. Happy birthday to your son. It is amazing how they grow older so much faster than we do.

Happy birthday to your son. That cake looks wonderful! I want to know how you manage your son getting older and you not! I really do need help in that area. LOL I've been to NYC but that was years and years ago so I don't remember much and I bet things have really changed. You'll have to tell us all about your trip. Have a great time.

Happy b-day to your youngest. Oh, your Mom is a blast! I do not know how you are not in stitches all the time.

I can't believe that you are headed my way. The shop you are looking for is the City Quilter. Would you believe I have never been there? I always end up going to PA.

And, by the way, that cake looks sooo good.

You're going to have a great time in NYC, Allie! Have you really never been there? It's been a big part of my life. I grew up in the New York Metropolitan area and spent a number of years going to school, working, and living in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It's one of my favorite places and I love just to walk the streets of Midtown, with no particular destination. http://www.cityquilter.com/ Note that they are always closed on Mondays and they are closed this coming Sunday, the 2nd of September. I hope your schedule allows you to go on one of the other days. It's a not to be missed store.

What do you mean, you stay the same age? Surely you get younger every year??

It might be a bit wierd an English girl giving US tourist advice to an American, but here we go! Don't bother with the statue of liberty - it's tiny and very disappointing. Instead I'd catch the Staten Island ferry, it's free and you get to see the iconic new york skyline and the Statue. Well worth it. There's a bookshop called Strand, it's really cheap and full of treasures, both new and used. I can't remember where it is but it's somewhere near 5th Avenue and 14th street... I think!

Go to Greenwich Village, it's wonderful, I love it. We had a meal and cocktails on Bleeker street, mainly because the song by Simon and Garfunkel is one of my favourites!!

MOMA is amazing, truly amazing. I didn't like the Googenheim though...

Go to Purl Soho, then tell us all about it!!

Have an amazing time, I'm so jealous, NY city is my favourite place on earth.

Wendy said...

Oh, and if you go to Times Square around 5pm, you can pick up cheap tickets to broadway shows that night, especially if you don't mind which one.

What a great looking kid!!! It's amazing to think you had him when you were only 12...

Unfortunately I am aging and boy do I feel it these days!

New York city - whoo hoo. All I cared about was the food. Try and experience as much ethic as you can. If you like BBQ find an Argentine restaurant serving churrascaria :)))) Have a wonderful trip!
