Busy As A Bee

...But no sewing to show for it!  Instead, I took Sandra and Robin's advice to keep my sewing area clean and organized, and get my projects kitted up, ready to pick up and start sewing when I find a few minutes.

I had been putting stitchery projects in ziploc bags with their floss colors, and then tucking them in a drawer and forgetting all about them.  That's not good, right?  I needed them where I could see them, and this is the solution I came up with.

I removed my closet doors, put my vanity in there and added my cutting table [formerly my ironing table] on wheels in it.  Across the top of the closet, I left the rod in place - it's a shower curtain rod, very sturdy.  I went to Walmart and got some cheap [$1.16] shower curtain rings, and hung my ziploc bags across it.

A friend gave me some small, clear, zippered bags that her new sheer curtains came in, and they're the perfect size to hold bits and bobs, and charm packs.

I would rather have gone to IKEA for fun new organizing tools, but this is my low-cost [although not PRETTY] solution.

I also organized the rest of the room.  My cutting and sewing area:

Computer area, and "design wall", which is simply the ironing table cover I made turned around backwards.

I never did finish the corners on it properly....maybe someday I will.  Don't hold your breath.  Computer area:

That's also where I sit to do my hand quilting, and the pouch that Sandra made me is perfect to keep my threads, thimbles, needle book and scissors tidy.

I'm feeling pretty darn good about how organized I am, this is such a small room and hard to keep from getting messy.  When it's chaos, I don't feel like sewing, I just feel like running away.  Please forgive the gloomy pics, it's another dreary typical Michigan day - and please don't notice all the holes in my walls.  This room needs painting [and patching] desperately but that's a whole 'nother level of chaos I can't take.

Joanne from Splitting Stitches had a surprise give-away the other day.  What a sweetie she is - she sent me a lovely package!  Four fq's of gorgeous spring-y fabric, some Aurifil thread, the sweetest tissue holder [perfect for my Dottie Bag!] with lots of refills, a little Mucinex guy [appropriate as we've had SO many colds this year, lol!] and the yummiest candy EVER.  Gone now, sad to say...but I enjoyed it thoroughly and didn't share.

Thank you so much Joanne!

Cheryl from Willowberry Designs has a brand new pattern, is it CUTE - and she's having a give-away in honor of it!  Go check her out, and good luck in the give-away - although I hope I win one, she's giving away three copies!

I have a lot more tutorial links to give you, but this post is already long so I'll save it for Tuesday.  Sandra and Carmen have been busy!

OMG you certainly have been busy cleaning and straightening up. I love that idea of putting your stitchery in baggies and hanging them up. I too have some in drawers that should be finished. Lucky you with the giveaway goodies.

Hey Allie! Wow, girl, you have been busy. And I really like how you organized your space. Forget Ikea...it's fabulous when you can use the things that you already have and make it work as well as you did with your sewing space. I think with all of your pretty little stitcheries and mini quilts hanging up, it's a very pretty and cozy space to create! Makes me want to get down in my space and spruce it up a bit, too!

Have a great day, and I'll be calling you soon! :o)

XOXO,

Cyndi

Wow, good for you for kitting all your projects together so neat and tidy. You're sewing and computer area looks so organized. You go girl! I bet it feels so good. I haven't been in my sewing room in quite some time and I need to do some spring cleaning and organize like you. Then get back to creating. Wish me luck and have a great week!

Wow! Allie! I love your sewing room. It looks so neat and organized! I love the idea of the curtain bags for keeping your projects in. I need to do this as my cutting table just has piles of them and I can't work like this! I need to get them put away. My closet in my room holds all of my fabric and I have no place for the rod, but is a GREAT idea!

Love your studio!!

What a wonderful organizing job and everything where you can see it and know what is in it. I should do that with projects I am working on.

Allie your craft room is gorgeous! So bright and cheerful and full of goodies - I, luckily, have the furnace and water softener and air conditioner in my craft room, plus the floors/walls/ceiling are unfinished. Can you say DREARY??!? LOL!! The only thing it has going for it is that it's a good size, and the cat likes to come in and visit me :)

Allie you did an amazing job in your sewing room! I love how you hung your projects and whatnots from the curtain rod. Your sewing room looks so warm and inviting.

Your organization of the sewing room will work well for you. I like that you have wall space for some smaller quilts. My sewing room walls are taken up with shelves of fabric and a bookcase of patterns and books.

Like they all said...WOW! I love the ideas of hanging the kits. I would much rather reuse items and save money for more fabric and such rather than buy new at Ikea.....

I seem to spend more time organising than sewing these days....

I love your wardrobe solution, and I don't think trip to Ikea would have provided such a fun solution. I want to hang things in zip lock bags now....

Lookin good lady! I wish I had a room to do this in.

Val said...

Well I honestly can say that you are one of the smartest girls I know. That is such a clever idea to hang those projects up. And I LOVE the vanity in the closet area. You have been a busy bee.

That is a pretty smart solution !

It all looks great. I SO need to do this. I listened to Sandra's advice, then did NOTHING about it! The problem is that my crafting room is full of stuff from the dining room that is yet to be finished so I can't really move it around yet and I'd love to get it looking how I want it. I do think a tidy up and project sort out is required though!

Stitched With Prayer said...

Wow Allie, you are my hero!!! I'm finally, FINALLY, getting up and around more so today or tomorrow for sure, I plan to get into my sewing room and organize it, lay out the quilt blocks for a quilt I have only to sew the blocks together and border and get it sent off to the quilter. Then I can move on to whatever I want. I have 8 projects in plastic totes that are organized and ready to go but I don't want to start anything new until I have my sewing room back in order. I have just be stacking things on my cutting table since before my surgery and though it isn't a lot, I like to start in a clean fresh room. So I either have to get mine ready, or come to your house, LOLOL. Yours looks wonderful, thanks for some much needed inspiration!!! Hugs...

I think your sewing room looks cheery and inspirational. I love how you did the ziplocs with the shower curtain rings. I would have thought they would rip with the weight of fabric inside.

What a lovely room! I too can't think when the studio gets too messy. Even thousgh some organizing solutions aren't pretty - if they do the job, well sometimes that's all we need!

Oh, dear, you are an inspiration ! I am considering removing the closet doors in my Stash Room. Right now I
have to reach over a quilt rack to gain access to my closet. With the doors removed and re-arranging the shelves within would be a great improvement.
I've been reading your posts and see that we have a friend in common.
I'm talking about the Lovely Lady Cyndi at Bluebirds Wing.
I'm going to Follow you. No not stalking just google reader follow.
